Demolition starts on Flora House

The handsome 1862-built Flora House, in Greensted Road, is being demolished (see post "Greenstead Road: not to be ignored" below). To make way for what? No details appear to be available under Greenstead Road on the council's planning website. I expect the worst: dreary, cramped, low-quality construction with a few random pastichy period bits added on to provide the planners with an excuse for approving it. I hope I'm wrong. See more pictures of Greenstead Road.

I'm as astonished as you, indeed appalled, that they can knock down such a wonderful house. Moreover, because just 'round the corner into East Hill they have renovated even older properties and managed to maintain the period feel, at least on the outside. That could so easily have happened with Flora House. I am confident, however, that NOTHING will be built in the space created, since there is no planning application on the council's website, and nothing displayed on the nearby lampposts etc. Any such application will be met with objections, not least by me. I fear it is time the quiet among us need to stand up and be counted and to say "no" to this kind of development.

Great to hear from Greenstead Road! Despite the loss of Flora House, Greenstead Road can still be saved from the march of mediocrity, I'm sure.
